In the other Pool A matches, Harlequins proved well too strong for Hartpury in a 54-14 win, while Gloucester battled past Nottingham 42-14. In Pool B, Leicester Tigers scored eight tries as Dan McKellar’s side claimed a 50-6 demolition of Caldy. Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks also avoided upset losses as they breezed past Ampthill and Bedford respectively. Exeter recorded the biggest win of Pool C and of the opening round of matches, thumping Bristol Bears 75-0. Will Glister scored his second try of the match after the break to reduce Northampton’s deficit, but further tries from Matt Cornish, Cian Kelleher and Jonah Holmes put the result beyond doubt. Also on Sunday, Jersey Reds hammered London Scottish 43-0 in Pool C, running in seven unanswered tries. Leicester Tigers and Exeter Chiefs also recorded huge victories, while Saracens suffered a shock defeat at the hands of second-tier Coventry. The upset that was to come wasn’t apparent in the opening stages as Ben Harris got Saracens off to a superb start, crossing the white line in the ninth minute before Manu Vunipola nailed the conversion to make it 7-0. Hooker Suva Ma’asi quickly hit back as Coventry levelled in the 16th minute before Harris restored Saracens’ advantage, but Will Wand’s try at the end of the first half ensured it was 14-14 at the break.
